Registration is now open for an annual event the Cornelius Parks and Recreation Department hopes will develop into a signature lakeside tradition.

Now in its second year, the Cornelius Cardboard Boat Regatta pits amateur boat builders against each other in a race on Lake Norman. Prizes will be awarded for Best Decorated, People’s Choice and the Titanic Award for best sinking vessel.

Detailed rules are available on the town website, but all boats must be made primarily from cardboard and tape, and there are limitations on substances used to seal seams. Participants must be at least 8 years old. The race consists of timed heats followed by a championship heat.

The event takes place Saturday, May 2, at Jetton Park from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Advance registration is required and capped at 25 teams. The cost is $25 per team for residents and $35 for nonresidents. Proceeds benefit Float It Forward, a nonprofit that provides personal flotation devices for docks and educates lake users on water and boating safety.

Admission is free for spectators, and a food truck will be on site.

Last year’s event was won by the Fohr family of Mooresville with their vessel, “Sea Ya.” The Titanic Award went to a boat aptly named “Soggy Bottom.”
