Davidson Community Players is bringing big hair, classic rock and 1980s nostalgia to the Cain Center for the Arts this week with a production of “Rock of Ages.”

The Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical runs through Aug. 1 in downtown Cornelius, featuring a soundtrack packed with rock hits from bands including Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Poison, Whitesnake, REO Speedwagon and Twisted Sister.

Set on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip in 1987, the musical follows aspiring rock musician Drew and small-town newcomer Sherrie as they pursue their dreams while trying to save a legendary rock club from redevelopment. The production combines comedy, romance and high-energy performances with more than two dozen well-known songs, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “Here I Go Again” and “The Final Countdown.”

The show is recommended for older teens and adults because of mature themes and language.

Performances continue at 7:30 p.m. today through Friday, with shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

“Rock of Ages” debuted on Broadway in 2009 and earned five Tony Award nominations. The musical has since been staged around the world and inspired a 2012 film adaptation starring Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough and Alec Baldwin.
