Weekend Weather: Forecast and weather websites

Nov. 7. Before we get to the weekend, I did some research to find out which weather website is best for the forecasts we share with our readers on Mondays and Fridays. Here’s what I learned:

Weather.gov and Weather.com use different forecasting models, update cycles, and methods of interpretation.

Weather.gov relies on forecasts generated by National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists using National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) models, refined with human expertise. Local NWS offices can further adjust those forecasts based on real-time observations and local knowledge.

Weather.com, operated by The Weather Company (owned by IBM), uses a proprietary model called IBM GRAF, which updates more frequently and focuses on hyper-local data. Weather.com’s forecasts are more automated, so they often react faster to new data—but can sometimes overreact to short-term changes.

So, do you feel more knowledgeable about which website is best? Me neither. We’ll stick with Weather.gov because it provides updates in text and not pictures.

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Calm wind becoming south-southwest 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Tonight, a 30 percent chance of showers, mainly between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 54. Southwest wind around 7 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Light west wind. Saturday night, a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Sunday night, partly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Next week: Temperatures cool off, with a chance of freezing temps at night.
