Weekly planner Dec 6-12: Holiday events, book give-away and exercise options

Through Dec. 10: Santa’s mailbox

Trying to figure out what to do? This calendar, published weekly on Mondays, can point you to some of the best options in Lake Norman.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up:

Through Dec. 10

Santa’s Mailbox 

Bring your letter for Santa to the Cornelius Arts Center and send it on an express journey to the North Pole. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope and Santa will write you back. You can also drop off after regular business hours at the outdoor mail intake. Cain Center for the Arts’ Cornelius Arts Center, 19725 Oak St. Suite 1.

Dec. 6-9

Davidson Community Players

Every Christmas Story Ever Told at DCP’s Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8 pm, Sunday 2 pm. All seats are reserved. Tickets are $15-$20 and may be purchased online  or by calling the box office at 704-892-7953.  Masks are required for all performances regardless of vaccination status.

Dec. 8

The Theory and Practice of Institutional Change 

1:30 – 2:30 pm. Dean Byron McCrae (DOS) leads a community conversation to help us identify how we can each make contributions to improve Davidson’s institutional culture in antiracist and multicultural ways. Wall Academic Center Hamilton W. McKay Atrium, Davidson College.

Watch Me Dance – Chicago Stepping 

7-8 pm Fridays through Dec. 26 at the Huntersville Arts & Cultural Center, 109 S. Old Statesville Rd. Purple Charlotte Steppers presents an interactive dance series that promotes social connectivity and health through movement. This series celebrates American style social dancing. Watch Me Dance highlights the American social dance styles birthed in African-American communities, including Chicago Stepping, Detroit Ballroom and Soul Line Dancing. This series is open to children 10 and older and adult children of all ages. Bost Grist Mill Christmas Open House

5 pm – 8 pm. Special night of shopping on Fridays. Products available: corn meal, Coarse Southern grits, dips and mixes, organic pig meat from Bost Farms, small gift items, wooden toys, gift baskets, cookbooks, pillows, local honey, candles and more. Dec.10-11

Huntersville Half Marathon & Holiday 5k 

7 pm Friday. The Huntersville Holiday 5k will start Friday night, while the Huntersville Half Marathon & 10k will begin on Saturday morning at 8 am. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go toward supporting Speed for Need, a non-profit focused on empowering members of the community affected by disability or disease through participation in fitness events.

Dec.11

Free Home Composting Workshop

10-11 am. Join Master Composter Lino Scala as he discusses and demonstrates the various ways to compost food waste and other organics at home. This workshop will teach you the basics about indoor and outdoor composting options, including vermicomposting (worm) and bokashi composting. Cost is free but please click here to register.

McDowell Creek Greenway Dedication

12 pm. Celebrate with the town as it opens another part of the Emerald Necklace, connecting the north end of the McDowell Creek Greenway at Westmoreland Road to Magnolia Estates Drive. Meet at North Trail Head @ Magnolia Estates Drive.

Music at the Mill

Seth Walker is often cited as one of the most prolific contemporary Americana artists on the scene today. He’s a multi-dimensional talent who combines a gift for melody and lyric alongside a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice with a true-blue knack for getting around on the guitar. 9 am to noon. Holiday market.

Free Christmas Book give-away

10 am – noon. Books for all ages available. Cookies and cocoa to all guests. Point of Grace Lutheran Church, 16214 Statesville Rd., Huntersville.

Bost Grist Mill Christmas Open House 

10 am – 5pm. Hot apple cider, light refreshments, tasting  stone ground grits, and a chance to win  weekend drawings for door prizes. Dec. 11

Cardio Funk 

9-10 am. Saturdays. This high-energy class takes place at Bailey Road Recreation Center. $5/class or $40 for a 10-class pass. pay at the door.

Dec. 12

Open Gym Senior Pickleball 

1-3 pm Sundays at JV Washam Recreation Center. No session on Dec. 26 or Jan. 2.

Santa at Birkdale Village 

By appointment.  Santa will be at Birkdale Village throughout the season and taking photos at the  North Pole-inspired cottage.

Through Dec. 24: Holidays at the Garden

Through  Jan. 2, 2022

Holidays at the Garden 

5 to 9 pm. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s annual holiday event features a topiary display, rolling lights of the Piedmont Prairie and  twinkling cherry trees. Advance tickets for Holidays at the Garden are being sold online.  A limited number of tickets are being sold for various time slots to help control the crowd. CDC protocols will be followed. Food trucks will be available.

Through Jan. 21

Fabrics & Frames art show 

This multi-disciplinary exhibition features work from husband and wife team Terry and Sue Ruhs of Waxhaw. Cornelius Arts Center. Gallery hours of operation: 10 am – 4 pm Monday – Friday.
