Speed limit coming down on Bethel Church Road

Bethel Church Road

Nov. 20. By Dave Vieser. There’s likely to be a New Years gift for residents on or near Bethel Church Road: A lower speed limit.

NCDOT spokeswoman Jen Goodwin told Cornelius Today this week that they are working on getting the ordinance process approved for 35 mph.

The process typically takes roughly six weeks. After final approval, new signs can be installed.

Goodwin said that with the upcoming holidays, it may be the first of the year when the change can be scheduled.

The request to reduce the speed limit from the current 45 mph came from the Cornelius Town Board and stems from the fact that Bethel Church Road is almost entirely residential street with numerous pedestrians and cyclists.

  2. Good Job! However, the entire township is infested with excessive speeding, dead tags, phone to head, texting while driving violations. I see those every day! West Catawba Ave, Westmoreland, Jetton and Hwy 21 all need rigorous speeding enforcements. I said for many years Cornelius Police can’t seem to find their ticket books. Let’s get with it, do the job my Cornelius Police tax fee money is paying you to do!!

  3. This sounds good but if there is no enforcement it doesn’t mean too much. Case in point is the “No left turn” on the corner of Old Jetton and Jetton rd. People make the left turn all day long without consequences.

  4. Think of the money our city could make enforcing some of these…. Easy revenue from those who are definitely not obeying the laws. Another is Torrence Chapel-people driving the wrong way to cut the traffic to get into the left turn lane. I keep waiting to witness a head-on….
