Sansbury Resigning from Town Board, Relocating

Town Board Commissioner Todd Sansbury is resigning his seat due to a career relocation and will be replaced in the coming weeks. Sansbury, an executive with biopharmaceutical company Cytokinetics, is relocating to Georgia with his family.

Sansbury was elected to the board in 2021 as part of a group that promised to curb large-scale residential growth following board approval of numerous single-family and multifamily residential projects, many of which are currently under construction.

The board instituted an 18-month moratorium pending completion of a new land-use plan, moved toward a full-time fire department and purchased 74 acres on Bailey Road to preserve land that otherwise could have been developed commercially.

Sansbury also was a strong supporter of the parks department, serving as the board’s liaison for all five years. He played an integral role in the parks bond initiative and worked to improve communication with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education.

The announcement was made during the Monday night meeting of the Town Board of Commissioners.

Board members and town staff praised Sansbury’s service, describing him as a thoughtful, methodical and principled leader who consistently focused on representing residents. Commissioners credited him with helping advance the board’s priorities on growth management, land preservation, public safety and town services while remaining committed to the concerns of citizens.

Mayor Denis Bilodeau concluded the remarks.

“I hate that you’re leaving us,” Bilodeau said, echoing other commissioners’ descriptions of Sansbury as thoughtful, objective, committed, caring and methodical. “But most of all, a friend,” he said. “Best of luck.”

The Town Board’s rules of procedure govern the process of filling the vacancy but the board determines what candidates will be considered.

No sooner than 14 days after a resignation, and no later than 30 days after the effective resignation, the mayor must open the floor for nominations. Commissioners may then nominate a candidate for any reason and debate their qualifications.

After discussion ends, a commissioner can make a formal motion to appoint a nominee. The board then votes on the motion; if it passes, the vacancy is filled. If the motion fails, the board returns to nominations and repeats the process until a candidate receives enough votes for appointment.
