Planning Board may expand to 10 members

April 10. By Dave Vieser. Tentative plans to enlarge the Planning Board received a positive response from current planning board members and will now be sent to the Cornelius Town Board for further review.

The current board has seven members, with three alternates. The proposal is to take the board to 10 members, with no alternates.

Planning Director Rox Burhans said that the restructuring would provide additional perspectives as members consider various issues.

Planning board members would also continue to function as Board of Adjustment and Watershed Review Board members under the proposal.

Planning Chair Susan Johnson was elected to the Town Board in November, leaving planning with a vacancy that has yet to be filled by the town board. Appointments could be made at the same meeting the expansion would be adopted.

The Planning Board normally meets once a month and makes non-binding recommendations to the Town Board on rezoning requests. Surrounding municipalities have planning boards which contain anywhere from seven to 10 members.
