Mtn. Island Lake more inclined to flood

May 20. Largely because of the size of Lake Norman, no flooding is expected along the lake in Cornelius, but it’s another story around Mountain Island Lake. Duke Energy is looking Mountain Island Lake to begin spilling this evening. With additional rain it could go above 102 feet.

The Catawba basin is experiencing significant inflows due to days of steady rains. Lake Norman usually doesn’t flood because of its sheer size.

It’s going to rain even more , with precipitation amounts of 2-4 inches over the next couple of days. On Friday, look for a slight chance of rain before 1 pm, then a chance of showers between 1 pm and 4 pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm.
