Calling all local artists!  The Cornelius Arts Center wants to show your work! The Center’s gallery program is devoted to showcasing local, regional and national artistic talent in both solo and group exhibitions. And be sure to check out the talent of local budding artists at the Center’s “Home Grown: Sprouts” exhibition on display through Aug. 25.

Thursday, Aug. 16
Newsmakers Breakfast
The nation’s opioid crisis will be the topic of a discussion with the Cornelius chief of police, the medical director of the emergency department at the Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and the mother of a victim of the opioid epidemic. 7:15-9 a.m. at The Peninsula Club in Cornelius.
Mixed-media exhibition featuring more than 100 works created by children from our summer arts and recreation camps. Open through Aug. 25 at the Cornelius Arts Center.
Beyond Walls is Cornelius’s annual, award-winning exhibition. Open through January 31, 2019 at Robbins Park in Cornelius.
Join a ranger to learn the basic paddling techniques and talk about hydrology. Please register. 3-4 p.m. at Lake Norman State Park in Troutman.

Culture Bites
Enjoy a family-friendly evening of arts, culture and tasty food samples from diverse local restaurants. 6-8:30 p.m. at the Davidson Town Green.
LangTree Live concerts are held every Thursday during the summer. Red Dirt Revival will perform 7-9 p.m. at LangTree Lake Norman in Mooresville.
Friday, Aug. 17
Panelists will discuss the Hummingbird Trail and CATS. 8:30-10 a.m. at the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce in Cornelius.
Countdown to Kindergarten
Come meet local kindergarten teachers, visit a pretend classroom and meet “Gus the Bus.” Free. 4-7 p.m. at Discovery Place KIDS in Huntersville.
Come meet new friends before kindergarten begins! 4:30-6 p.m. at J. V. Washam Elementary School in Cornelius.

Community Shred Event

Sunday, Aug. 19
Sunday worship services will focus on missions the church has been involved with and supporting. On Aug. 19, Syrian pastor the Rev. Boutros Zaour and his wife will present the situation in Syria and the role churches are playing to provide hope. Sunday school is at 9:15 a.m., and worship services are at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius.
Enjoy a self-guided adventure through Lake Davidson. Paddles, life vests and your choice of a kayak, canoe or paddle board provided. 2-5 p.m. at The Nature Preserve in Davidson.
Roots music featuring a rotating lineup of musicians from the greater Charlotte area. 6-10 p.m. at Old Town Public House in Cornelius.
A gospel sing will be held at 6 p.m. on the Davidson Town Green.

Meet and Greet
The North Mecklenburg Community Chorus will kick off its fall season with a meet and greet. 6:30 p.m. at Huntersville United Methodist Church.

Public Discussion
Dr. Kristie Foley will present “Social Determinants of Health.” 6:30 p.m. at the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson.
Free and open book club meets monthly. This month’s discussion will be on “A Piece of the World” by Christina Baker Kline. 7 p.m. at Main Street Books in Davidson.
Wednesday, Aug. 22
Come learn to play and compete. Open to everyone. 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Parker Banner Kent and Wayne Comics and Games in Cornelius.
Thursday, Aug. 23
Meet the artists of the “Home Grown: Sprouts” exhibition: campers ages 4-16 from the summer arts and recreation camps. Enjoy crafts, refreshments and more. 5-7 p.m. at the Cornelius Arts Center.
Show up and drum with our instruments or bring your own! Drinks and snacks available. 6-8 p.m. at Brick Row in Cornelius.
Learn the basics of flatwater kayaking and enjoy a guided tour to discover the beauty, history and significance of Mountain Island Lake. 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Latta Nature Center in Huntersville.

Saturday, Aug. 25
More than 750 athletes will swim, bike and run in one of the area’s most popular triathlon events. 7 a.m. at Ingersoll Rand in Davidson.
Boat Show
The Charlotte Antique and Classic Boat Show will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Trump National Golf Club in Mooresville.
Bounce house, giant Jenga, Connect Four, face painting, magic, live music, treats. 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Langtree Lake Norman in Mooresville.
