Jan. 7. The volume of new coronavirus cases today hit 28,474, more than 10 times the daily volume recorded in late November. COVID-related hospitalizations statewide rose to 3,474.

Positivity rate

The positivity rate statewide climbed to 31.2 percent. In Mecklenburg, the 14-day average positivity rate climbed to 24.5 percent.

NC deaths

There were 33 new COVID deaths reported today.

Mecklenburg

There were 2,655 new COVID cases reported county-wide from Thursday to today.

There were no new deaths countywide in today’s NCDHHS report.

During the past week, there was an average of 2,315 laboratory confirmed infections per day in Mecklenburg County compared to the 14-day average of 1,781 confirmed infections.

North Mecklenburg (change from Thursday)

• Cornelius: 74 new cases, 4,992 cumulative total, 32 deaths cumulative total.

• Davidson: 52 new cases, 2,898 cumulative total, 20 deaths cumulative total.

• Huntersville: 183 new cases, 11,143 cumulative total, 78 deaths cumulative total.
