Can’t make it to Churchill Down? Head to Birkdale Village for a party, horse race

Birkdale Village’s inaugural Kentucky Derby watch party is free to attend and first-come for seating.

The 151st Kentucky Derby will be held at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Twenty horses will compete in the Derby.

Derby Day at Birkdale Village, from 4-7 pm on the The Plaza, includes live music; mint juleps, margaritas and other beverages for purchase from bartaco and Red Rocks Cafe; Derby-themed photo station; betting station with all proceeds benefiting Cool Kids Clubhouse (raffle prizes from Birkdale Village restaurants and retailers); pop-up crafts from select retailers.

The Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the Triple Crown, is set for 6:57 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles will give the iconic “Rider’s Up” command ahead of the race.

The race will air live on The Plaza’s LED screen. Derby traditions call for party-goers to wear spring dresses (both long and short), suits, leather shoes and heels. If you insist on wearing pants at all, they should be loose, fancy, and paired with eye-catching accessories. No denim!

Green is considered an unlucky color to wear to the Kentucky Derby, especially for horse owners and trainers. Carrying a $50 bill is also considered bad luck for those betting on the races.

Embrace vibrant colors, with cobalt, pinks and oranges being  trending choices for the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Hats are a must-have accessory, with wide-brimmed hats and fascinators being traditional choices.

In the event of inclement weather, a notice will be posted on Birkdale’s website and social media channels (@birkdalevillagenc).
