Mamma Mia! begins 10-show run at CSD

Oct. 15. Students at the Community School of Davidson will present their on-stage production of Mamma Mia! from Oct. 16 through Oct. 26.

Mamma Mia! is a musical based on the songs of Swedish pop group ABBA and debuted in London 26 years ago. In 2008, Meryl Streep starred in the movie adaptation of the play, which follows the story of main character Sophie on the eve of her wedding. Not knowing who her biological father is—and unbeknownst to her mother—Sophie invites three men she believes could be her father to the ceremony.

Director and set designer Lucas Devore said the school chose Mamma Mia! to give more students a chance to get involved in theater, including those who might not have participated otherwise. The production features 40 students in the cast and crew, along with a student orchestra and dance team.

“I think the music is just infectious,” Devore said. “The actors bring an energy to the songs that just takes them to the next level.”

Performances will be held at the Community School of Davidson Art Space, 404 Armour St. in Davidson. Showtimes are Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m., with matinees at 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for students in advance, or $12 for students and $15 for adults at the door.
