June 27. House Bill 948 — a proposal to allow a 1-cent countywide tax referendum to address transportation needs — has rolled through both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly and will go to the governor for his signature.
If approved by voters, the one-cent tax would fund a mix of transportation improvements, including transit, greenways, sidewalks, roads, and bike infrastructure.

“By moving this forward, our state leaders are affirming that every family and worker, no matter where they live or how they travel, deserves better access to opportunity,” said Shannon Binns, executive director of Sustain Charlotte. “This tax will help fund transit, roads, sidewalks, and bike infrastructure, strengthening our economy, reducing congestion, improving public health, advancing equity, and protecting our environment.”
Mr. Binns, tax increases lead to more government… and bigger government does not result in the outcomes you want. The outcomes you mentioned are produced by free enterprise, capitalism, and low taxes.
