Swim Advisory Issued for Lake Norman

The City of Charlotte has issued a no-swim advisory for a cove on Lake Norman near Harborside Drive following a sewer overflow that has been repaired.

The cove is near the Harborside community and LakeHouse Wine Bar and Grill. The city advised residents and pets to avoid the area while staff collects and tests water samples for bacteria.

Officials said the advisory will be lifted when the water is deemed safe for recreational use.

The overflow comes two weeks after the Cornelius Town Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a local ordinance imposing fines of up to $25,000 for illicit discharges into water or waterways in and around the town.

The maximum fine under existing Mecklenburg County regulations is $10,000, meaning violators could face up to $35,000 in combined town and county fines.

The City of Charlotte did not immediately return a message seeking clarification on whether the spill was related to public works, or a private contractor or homeowner.
