Tommy’s Appliance Tips: Steps to take to protect appliances when it’s cold

Well, winter has come, and a lot of people have a second refrigerator in the garage.

One thing to keep in mind: If the garage temperature is lower than the thermostat in the refrigerator, it will not run. This causes the food in the freezer section to thaw.

They do make refrigerators for cold environments, but they are very expensive.

Also, if you have a washing machine in a cold environment, when the temperature gets excessively cold, be sure to disconnect the hoses to the washer to prevent hose to burst.

Washers always retain a small amount of water in the hoses and the pump and the outer tub, which could also freeze so keep that in mind.  You may want to use a lightbulb, if necessary, to warm things up.

If you have thick blankets, they are good to cover up a washing machine as well.

And don’t forget dryer vents. Very warm, moist air going outside hits cold dry air, which can cause lint build up in the flapper on the outside. So if you experience long, drying times, make sure your vent is clear.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
