March 16. Mayor Woody Washam began tonight’s Town Board meeting with a statement about this “very concerning time for our town.” He said the coronavirus situation is unprecedented, with school closures and social distancing guidelines which seem to change from day to day, if not hour by hour.
The Town Board just now unanimously approved a proclamation of a State of Emergency town-wide.

Officials will continue to evaluate meetings and events scheduled for the next 8 weeks, but virtually all meetings and PARC programs have been cancelled.
Town officials are sitting about 6 feet apart with officials who once sat up at the dais out in the audience.
“I am glad I am here with you tonight,” the mayor stated.
The Graylyn Conference Center budget retreat next week will be held locally, not in Winston-Salem.
Rather than meetings, the town is encouraging conference calls. Town Board meetings, especially when public hearings are concerned, are problematic. The public has a right to speak out on a number of issues.
Town Manager Andrew Grant said a minimal staffing plan will be adopted for Town Hall next week. Efforts to help contain the virus include no travel outside of the county, handshaking and cancelling group meetings and events.
There are 38 known cases in North Carolina and 33 cases in South Carolina, according to NC Sen. Jeff Jackson. There is no confirmed community spread at this point, but few people believe it is not happening.
The goal is to have testing available to those with a fever, a negative flu test and cough.
