Rotary launches campaign for literacy

April 14. The Davidson Rotary Club is collecting used tablet devices for local students in grades K-3. The campaign, dubbed “Eliminate the Digital Divide,” is aimed at supporting literacy by providing students access to reading and literacy programs available for iPad, Microsoft Surface, and other digital devices.

The local school system wants to ensure that all children are proficient in reading.  Research shows that children not reading proficiently by third grade are four times more likely not to graduate from high school.  The dropout risk increases when children are economically disadvantaged.

In addition to collecting tablets, the Rotary Club is also soliciting funds to purchase software licenses for literacy programs.
