Ramsey Creek beach opening may be delayed

April 19. By Dave Vieser. The long-awaited public beach at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius, which was scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend, may not open on time. Possible delays in realigning the Nantz Road-West Catawba Avenue intersection and installing a traffic signal are to blame.

The beach, which is part of the Mecklenburg County Park system, can accommodate around 500 swimmers.

“The county parks and rec people are telling us there is a 50/50 chance the road work will be not done on time,” Town Manager Anthony Roberts said. “I believe it should be our position that the beach doesn’t open until all that work is done.” The intersection is already hazardous for those attempting to turn left out of Nantz Road and onto West Catawba heading east.

According to the DOT, the signal will be installed by the developer of the adjacent Courtyards at Lake Norman. As part of the signal installation, the intersection will also be straightened.

The county is spending $425,700 on the beach which will accommodate up to 500 swimmers.
