Political newcomer, a businessman, joins race for Cornelius mayor

Kenny Campbell

July 18. By Dave Yochum. A competitive contest for mayor of Cornelius just got more interesting. Kenny Campbell has thrown his hat in the ring, making it a three-way race.

The Paradise Cove Ct. resident will be up against incumbent Woody Washam and second-time challenger Denis Bilodeau, a former three-term commissioner.

Washam squeaked by Bilodeau by five votes after a recount two years ago.

Campbell, 41, is launching his first bid for public office but he is an accomplished speaker and businessman.

He was a pastor for nine years before owning and operating a Christian publishing company with his wife Elle.

Campbell said after talking with friends and business owners he consistently heard their frustration with traffic and over-development.

Quotable

“As mayor, my priority would be preserving the historic charm of our town while taking immediate action to improve everyday life for all residents. I hope to bring a listening ear, innovative ideas, and a fresh perspective to an already amazing place to live,” Campbell said.

Political observers say Campbell’s candidacy changes the dynamic in the race, which appeared to be strictly a rematch of 2023 when Bilodeau’s strong showing surprised many people. Filing for the non-partisan November local elections closes at noon today.

Former Commissioner Derek Partee has filed to run for mayor of Huntersville. Incumbent Christy Clark has already filed. Dan Boone, who had announced plans to run for mayor, is expected to file to run for Town Board.
