Planning Board OKs plans for hotel-conference center and apartments

Proposed Sefton Park development outlined in red

Aug. 12. By Dave Vieser. The Cornelius Planning Board has unanimously recommended approval of a major new mixed-use project with 344 apartment units and a 113-room hotel and conference center on 10 acres of vacant property on Sefton Park Road opposite the CATS transit station.

South Carolina-based Shaw Resources also plans 7,800 square feet of commercial space. All told, there would be three buildings on 10 acres of vacant property just east of Planet Fitness.

Development principals Jack Shaw and Don Shaw hope the CATS station will be a natural connection for commuters into Charlotte.

An additional lot which is part of the proposal is located on the southeast corner of Sefton Park and One Norman Boulevard.

Road improvements

The approval recommendation requires the builder to extend turning lanes on several nearby roads at their expense.

Town Board has final approval

The Town Board hearing and a possible decision on the project is currently scheduled for Monday Sept. 20.
