NC reports drop in COVID-19 cases, positive test rate

Using John Hopkins data, we charted North Carolina’s new confirmed COVID-19 cases from Aug. 14 to Sept. 13. The state’s median number of new cases since Aug.14 is 1,345 and the state’s median over the past 7 days is 1,198

Sept. 14. By Dave Yochum. The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services today reported 845 new cases of the coronavirus statewide, down from 1,196 new cases Sunday and 1,504 new cases Saturday. Meanwhile, the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests appears to be trending down: From over 7 percent at the beginning of September to 4.9 percent in yesterday’s report and 4.8 percent in today’s.

Meanwhile, the number of new cases over the past week is running 11 percent below the number of new cases over the past month, another positive sign.

It’s in line with the NCDHHS goal of keeping the percentage positive below 5 percent. State public health officials track the pandemic through four main metrics: New cases, the percentage of people who test positive, hospitalizations and deaths.

Tests

The number of completed COVID-19 tests increased by 13,313 in today’s report to 2.63 million.

Hospitalizations

Hospitalization numbers rose after drifting down last week. There are now 895 people hospitalized statewide, according to the NCDHHS, up from 831 yesterday. On Aug. 14, the NCDHHS reported 1,049 people hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Deaths

There were eight new COVID-19 related deaths in today’s report, for a total of 3,060 since the NCDHHS first started tracking the coronavirus in March.

Mecklenburg

The number of cases county-wide increased by 63 from Sunday’s report to today’s, for a cumulative total of 26,931. The positive test rate has dropped to 5.1 percent from 6.7 percent 10 days ago. County-wide deaths increased by three in today’s NCDHHS report, for a total of 334.
