Joanne Ahern leaves North Mecklenburg Senior Center

AHERN

July 11. By Dave Vieser. Cornelius resident Joanne Ahern has resigned as Director of the North Mecklenburg Senior Center effective July 5. Ahern, who served for over 11 years as the center’s director, stepped down for personal reasons. There’s no word on a replacement.

She took over as director of the North Mecklenburg Senior Center in February 2005, after working at the Lake Norman YMCA. She led the center as it moved from the River Church in Cornelius, through a smaller Old Statesville Road/Huntersville location, and finally to more roomy quarters in Huntersville on Gilead Road. She was also at the helm when the center survived a major county funding crisis in 2009.

Ahern, a Pittsfield Mass. native, expects to continue working with local non-profit groups, including the Central Piedmont Community Chorus. She and her husband Gerry, a financial planner, have two grown children and live in the Magnolia Estates section of Cornelius.
