It’s only October, but, baby, it’s gonna be cold outside

Charlotte’s coldest month is January when the average temperature overnight is 32.1 degrees

Oct. 18. The National Weather Service has updated its freeze warning for the region, including Mecklenburg County.

The warning is in effect 2 am to 9 am Wednesday, Oct. 19, as sub-freezing temperatures as low as 31 degrees are expected.

Impact

The frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, the NWS says, and possibly damage outdoor plumbing.

Prepare

—Take steps to protect tender plants

—To prevent freezing and possible bursting  of outdoor water pipes, they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly

— Drain in-ground sprinkler system and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
