July 10. Dakeia Charles, 24, is in Mecklenburg County Jail after being charged with five counts of second-degree murder and other offenses in connection with a chain of wrecks on Interstate 485 that killed the daughter of a Cornelius woman, her husband and their two children as well as another man from Indian Trail one week ago.

Charles was also charged with driving while impaired, speeding and assault with a deadly weapon, among other charges.

The accident took the lives of Andrea and Matthew Obester and two of their three children, Elizabeth (12) and Violet (7), all from Belmont. Andrea’s mother, Faith Nye, lives in the Townhomes at Harborside off West Catawba. A third child, 14-year-old Jacob, was not in the car.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Jacob. More than $30,000 has been raised so far, toward a $50,000 goal.
