Have a heart: LKN Humane needs your help

Feb. 8. Lake Norman Humane has launched its  #HealingHearts initiative to raise money to treat heartworm-positive dogs.

In 2021, Lake Norman Humane transferred over 300 at-risk animals into its care from crowded shelters throughout North Carolina. Currently, North Carolina ranks third in the nation for the most shelter-animals euthanized each year.

Progress is being made, but there is much work to be done, said Jason Hayes, executive director at Lake Norman Humane, 2106 Charlotte Hwy., Mooresville, in a news release. With overcrowding running rampant in shelters throughout our state, even healthy and adoptable animals face euthanasia on a daily basis, he said.

The outlook for heartworm-positive dogs in many shelters is especially bleak as treatment takes several months and costs between $500 – $1,100 per dog, Hayes said. Far too many are euthanized. Heartworm Disease is  preventable, yet devastating if left untreated. Lake Norman Humane is committed to treating heartworm and saving lives.

Through #HealingHearts, Lake Norman Humane  asks for  support to help save the lives of more heartworm-positive dogs.

For two consecutive years Lake Norman Humane has increased capacity to care for heartworm-positive dogs, Hayes said. For 2022, group pledges to save more heartworm-positive dogs than any year before.
