Harold Eugene. “Gene” Bergh, Jr., 74

Harold Eugene “Gene” Bergh, Jr., 74, of Fripp Island, S.C., formerly of Huntersville, NC died February 15, 2015 after a week-long battle with sepsis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine McCann Bergh and Harold Eugene Bergh; and brother, John Jenkins.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joyce Stallings Bergh of Fripp Island, S.C.; sister, Patricia Chenoweth of Whitestone, Va.; daughter, Kim Bishop (Edward), Hopewell, Va.; son, Harold Eugene “Chip” Bergh III (Carrie), Midlothian, Va.; stepdaughters, Kim Stroud (Eddie), Columbia, S.C., Tammy Willis, Midlothian, Va.; six grandchildren, Melissa Casey (Sean), Jonathan O’Brien, Kelli Williams (Jordan), Morgen Stroud, Austin Bergh, Evan Bergh; two great-grandchildren, Patrick Casey, Conor Casey; and faithful dog, Wahoo. Gene was born February 16, 1940 and raised in Richmond, Va.

He was a graduate of John Marshall High School and The College of William and Mary. He was a life-long supporter of UVA athletics and loved the Hoos. Gene worked in the insurance business all his life, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Virginia. He ended his career as Director of Sales for the insurance subsidiary of Richmond Retail Merchants Services. He loved to play golf and was a member of Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond and Fripp Island Club in Fripp Island, S.C., where he was past president of the Men’s Golf Association. Gene loved his life and was happiest while on the golf course, watching all UVA sports and walking his dog, Wahoo. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, February 20 at Bliley’s-Augusta, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond Va., where a service will be held at 6 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at Independence Hill Baptist Church, 10220 Independence Hill Rd., Huntersville, N.C. 28078 on Tuesday, February 24, 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial service will be held at the Fripp Island Chapel at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Independence Hill Baptist Church or Fripp Island Chapel, 222 Tarpon Blvd., Fripp Island, S.C. 29920.
