The classic tale of Sleeping Beauty opens Friday and runs through Feb. 2.  Read Charlotte has its communitywide training session Saturday.  The Ada Jenkins Center hosts Unity in Community for anyone interested in promoting equality. Chinese New Year starts this month with “The year of the Rat.”

 

Thursday, Jan. 23

Board Game Night

 Come out and play games, bring your own or use one of ours from a wide collection of demo games. Free. Starts at 5pm. Parker, Banner, Kent & Wayne, Cornelius.

 

Friday, Jan. 24

Kyle Athayde with the Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble’s annual post-tour concert typically includes a local guest artist. This year the Jazz Ensemble will be joined by Kyle Athayde, a gifted big band leader, composer, arranger, and a performer on vibraphone as well as a host of other instruments. 7:30pm-9pm, Duke Family Performance Hall.

Sleeping Beauty

Once upon a time…in an enchanted kingdom, all gathered to celebrate the birth of the royal princess. Rupert Barber’s adaptation brings wicked Godmothers, good godmothers, magicians, kings, clowns – all fantastically intertwined into a delightful tale. 7pm, Armour Street Theater, Davidson.  (Runs through Feb. 2.)

 

Saturday, Jan. 25

Read Charlotte Training Session

Read Charlotte, a community-wide initiative uniting parents, educators and community partners to improve children’s literacy from birth through third grade, needs volunteers to become reading tutors at Cornelius Elementary.

Unity in Community

There will be a meeting of Unity in Community on Saturday Jan. 25 at 10am at the Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St., Davidson. Unity in Community is a grassroots organization of people in NorthMecklenburg County who are interested in studying racism and working to promote racial justice and equality.

Burns Night

Enjoy a traditional Scottish Supper and celebrate the birthday of Robert Burns at Historic Rural Hill. Space for this event is limited, and tickets must be purchased in advance. 6pm-9pm, Rural Hill.

Winter on the Homestead

Come to  one of Mecklenburg’s Oldest log cabins and experience winter on an 18th century homestead. Originally located off of North Tryon Street in Charlotte, the restored Ezekiel Alexander cabin provides a glimpse of life in early Charlotte.

Chinese New Year

Guo Nian Hao! Or Happy New Year! This year is the year of the rat. Learn about the traditions associated with the Chinese New Year. 11:15am-1:45pm. Discovery Place Kids, Huntersville.

What do Rangers do

Learn about being a North Carolina State Park Ranger. The presentation will be held outside the park visitor center, so dress accordingly. 1pm-2pm, Lake Norman State Park, Troutman.

Women United March 2020

STEAMfest

STEAMfest is a K-12 event that celebrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. 1pm-4pm, Woodlawn School, Mooresville.

Queen’s Feast

Queen’s Feast aka Charlotte Restaurant Week wraps up Jan. 26. You get 3 courses for $30 or $35 at 140+ restaurants including Alton’s Dressler’s and 131 MAIN.
