Events August 2 – August 12

Want to go behind the scenes with the Cornelius Police? Register now for the Cornelius Police Citizens Academy and learn about police training, arrest techniques, criminal investigations and much more. Space is limited, and participants must be Cornelius residents and pass a background check. Classes will be held Tuesday evenings starting Sept. 4.  Boys and girls ages 4-15 can register now through Aug. 13 for flag football with Cornelius PARC. Games will be played at Smithville Park and James Hoyt Wilhelm Park starting Sept. 8. Registration is also open for adult men’s softball, youth baseball and softball, youth soccer, youth lacrosse and tennis lessons for youth and adults.
Thursday, Aug. 2
Mixed-media exhibition featuring more than 100 works created by children from our summer arts and recreation camps. Open through Aug. 25 at the Cornelius Arts Center.
Special presenter JumpBunch will lead a class full of energy and enthusiasm designed to make physical activity fun for every child. 2-3 p.m. at the Cornelius Branch Library.
The Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists welcome biologist Gene Vaughan, who will present “The Lake Norman Creature Feature.” See live and preserved animals. 7 p.m. at the Mooresville Public Library.
LangTree Live concerts are held every Thursday during the summer. Heart tribute band Heartbreaker will perform 7-9 p.m. at LangTree Lake Norman in Mooresville.
Free showing of “Wonder.” Drinks, candy and popcorn available for purchase. 8:30 p.m. at Veterans Park in Huntersville.

Friday, Aug. 3
MadElf Productions presents a preview performance of this rock musical about a family divided over the politics of water. Aug. 3 and 5 at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.
Free outdoor concert with music by Billy Joel tribute band The Stranger. Food and drinks available for purchase. 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Mooresville Town Hall.
Davidson Community Players’ Teen Summer Stock Series presents the hilarious satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, corporate mismanagement and musical theatre itself. Aug. 3-5 at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.

Sunday, Aug. 5
Six-city event series in which cyclists compete in one of three distances. Each event culminates with a festival featuring food trucks, craft beer and live music. 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Davidson Town Green.
Sunday worship services will focus on missions the church has been involved with and supporting. On Aug. 5, the Haiti Mission Team will lead the service. Sunday school is at 9:15 a.m., and worship services are at10:30 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius.
Roots music featuring a rotating lineup of musicians from the greater Charlotte area. 6-10 p.m. at Old Town Public House in Cornelius.
Monday, Aug. 6
Join Mayor Woody Washam and other town commissioners for coffee and conversation. This month’s topic is public safety, specifically the police department. Coffee will be provided and breakfast may be purchased. 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Harvey’s in Cornelius.
“Castaway Camp: Shipwrecked!” will have songs, crafts, games, snacks and Bible lessons for kids in grades K-5. 2-5 p.m. Aug. 6-10 at First Baptist Church of Cornelius.

Davidson Community Players will hold open auditions for their next 2018 Main Stage production, “Deathtrap.” 7 p.m. Aug. 6-7 at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.
Tuesday, Aug. 7
Tracey Ratte will discuss the importance of digestive health and how to heal your gut. 7-8:30 p.m. at The Bradford Store in Huntersville.
The Cornelius Youth Orchestras is a community orchestra open to all youth musicians with one or more years of music instruction. Information sessions for the upcoming concert season will be held 6-7 p.m. Aug. 7 and 14 at Bailey Middle School. New member rehearsal and orientation will be Aug. 21.
Join the Cornelius Police Department for our annual event promoting safety and crime prevention. Children’s activities, food and entertainment followed by an outdoor movie. Bring school supplies for the police department’s “Pack the Patrol Car” collection. 6-8 p.m. at Bailey Road Park in Cornelius.

Thursday, Aug. 9
Join us as we wrap up the summer reading program and celebrate our readers. Grades K-5. 2-3 p.m. at the Cornelius Public Library.
Officials from Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson discuss regionalism, communication among lake towns and transportation projects. Open to the public. 5:30 p.m. at Cornelius Town Hall.
LaLaCaboosa series welcomes 80s tribute band Kids in America. 6:30-9 p.m. at Veterans Park in Huntersville.

The Justin Mintun Band headlines an evening of music, food trucks, craft brews, local artists, kids’ activities, more. 6-10 p.m. at Oak Street Mill in Cornelius.

Saturday, Aug. 11

Enjoy a self-guided adventure through Lake Davidson. Paddles, life vests and your choice of a kayak, canoe or paddle board provided. 2-5 p.m. at The Nature Preserve in Davidson.
Learn standup paddleboarding in a safe environment with certified instructors. Ages 12 and up3:30-5 p.m. at Aloha Paddle Sports in Cornelius.
A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk. Healthy snacks, coffee, water, and blood pressure checks are offered free of charge. 9-10 a.m. at the Davidson Town Green.
Meet players and coaches from Davidson College’s teams, enjoy food, giveaways, sports drills, music, more. 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Davidson Town Green.
Join us in reading and discussing literary books under 350 pages. This month’s selection is “Zero K” by Don DeLillo. 2-4 p.m. at the Cornelius Public Library.

Sunday, Aug. 12
Sunday worship services will focus on missions the church has been involved with and supporting. On Aug. 12, the Sunday school classes will combine for a presentation on the Charlotte Rescue Mission. The Rev. Tony Marciano will preach at the worship service. Sunday school is at 9:15 a.m., and worship services are at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius.
Hosted by drummer Brian Burton and bassist Scott McCloud, musicians of all kinds are welcome to participate. 6-9 p.m. at Old Town Public House in Cornelius.
Chunky Daddy will perform 6-8 p.m. on the Davidson Town Green.
