June 13. Cornelius Police have released the name of a drowning victim who fell off a private dock in the Island Forest neighborhood around 5:17 pm Sunday. The victim, identified as Shakira Varner of Charlotte,  and another female gained access to a private dock on Lake Norman.  Varner, 27, fell off the dock into the water and did not resurface.  Cornelius Police, Cornelius-Lemley Fire & Rescue, Huntersville Fire, NC Wildlife and MEDIC responded and located Varner at the bottom of Lake Norman.  Varner was transported to CMC Huntersville and was pronounced dead at 6:39pm.  The incident is still under investigation.
