COVID update Aug. 19: 7,020 new cases; 3,000+ hospitalized

Aug. 19. The NC Dept. of Health and Human Services today reported 7,020 new cases of COVID-19 statewide, the highest number of new cases since January. Hospitalizations broke through the 3,000 mark, with 3,083 North Carolinians hospitalized due to the coronavirus.

There were fewer than 500 COVID hospitalizations statewide two months ago.

NC deaths

The NCDHHS today reported 13 new coronavirus deaths statewide for a total of 14,005 since the pandemic began last year.

Testing

Positive tests are coming back at the rate of 12.3 percent statewide.

Mecklenburg

In Mecklenburg County, there were 634 new cases from Wednesday to today, as well as one new COVID-related death. The county-wide positive test rate stayed at 12.8 percent; the target rate is 5 percent.

North Mecklenburg (change from Wednesday)

Cornelius: 19 new cases, 3,271 cumulative total, 26 deaths total.

Davidson: 18 new cases, 1,917 cumulative total, 15 deaths total.

Huntersville: 40 new cases, 7,005 cumulative total, 55 deaths total.
