COVID-19 update: NC, Meck positivity rates reach 11%

Aug. 9. There were 3,863 new COVID-19 cases statewide in today’s statewide coronavirus update but it was down from Thursday’s and Friday’s totals which were in excess of 4,000 both days.

The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services says statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are at 1,946. They were in the 400-500 range during the first half of July—and rose steadily from there.

Positive testing statewide is at 11.1 percent. There were 31 new deaths over the weekend.

US trends

Florida, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi—states with some of the lowest vaccination rates account for about half of new cases and hospitalizations in the past week, despite making up less than a quarter of the U.S. population.

Mecklenburg County

In Mecklenburg County, the NCDHHS reported 1,755 new coronavirus cases from Friday to today, and one new COVID-related death. The positive test rate was at 11.6 percent

North Mecklenburg (change from Friday to today)

Cornelius: 40 new cases, 3,134 cumulative; 26 deaths cumulative.

Davidson: 24 new cases, 1,845 cumulative; 15 deaths cumulative

Huntersville: 103 new cases 6,683 cumulative; 54 deaths cumulative
