Counting on the Census: One new seat in Congress for NC

April 27. North Carolina gained 1 million residents over the last decade and one new seat in the US House of Representatives. The US Census Bureau puts the nation’s population at 331,449,281; North Carolina’s at 10,439,388 as of April 1, 2020.

Population growth in North Carolina gives the state 14 seats in Congress and one more electoral vote for the 2024 and 2028 general elections.

Each of the 50 states is entitled to a minimum of one seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Where the new seat will be is unclear.

North Carolina was one of six states to gain seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
