Coronavirus deaths climb, but hospitalizations fall from last week’s peak

July 27. By Dave Yochum. Over the past week, there have been 148 new COVID-19 deaths statewide, for a total of 1,790 since the NC Dept. of Health & Human Services began tracking the coronavirus in March. Mecklenburg County has had 184 deaths, up 10 in the past week.

The state has a cumulative total of 114,338 cases, up 13,292 in the past week, according to the NCDHHS. The cumulative number of confirmed cases in Mecklenburg is now 19,480, up from 17,571 on week ago.

The increase from Sunday to today was 1,625 statewide.

The median number of daily new cases statewide over the previous seven days is 1,849, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The daily median over the past month is 1,783. The past seven-day median is 3.7 percent higher.

Hospitalizations

The total number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 was at 1,169 as of noon today. That’s down one from yesterday and down from the 1,188—a record high—reached on Thursday last week. One week ago, there were 1,086 people hospitalized due to the coronavirus, the NCDHHS says.

Mecklenburg

In Mecklenburg County, the median number of daily new cases over the previous seven days is 279; over the past month, 305.

Mecklenburg has had a 7-day running average accounting for 14.6 percent of the state-wide cases per day.

North Meck data

In Cornelius, the cumulative count of COVID-19 cases climbed three to 330 total, up 15.79 percent from 285 one week ago. Deaths, virtually all of them at the Autumn Care nursing home, remain at 16 since the outbreak began.

In Davidson, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases climbed three to 164 total, up 20.59 percent from 136 one week ago. Deaths remain level at four, cumulative since the outbreak began.

In Huntersville, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases climbed by five to 516 total, up 15.70 percent from 446 one week ago. Deaths have been level for the past week at six total since the outbreak began.
