Cornelius K-9s Receive Protective Vests
The Cornelius Police Department’s K-9s Bob, Jace and Kilo have received bullet- and stab-resistant vests through a donation from Vested Interest in K9s Inc..
The vests were provided through the Survival Armor incentive program and embroidered with the message, “Gifted by Vested Interest in K9s and Survival Armor.”
Founded in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s is a nonprofit organization that provides protective vests and other assistance to law enforcement dogs and related agencies across the country. The vests are made in the United States, custom-fitted and certified by the National Institute of Justice.
According to the organization, it has provided more than 6,500 vests valued at nearly $6.9 million to law enforcement K-9s in all 50 states since its founding.
The program is available to active, certified law enforcement dogs that are at least 20 months old. K-9s with expired vests also qualify.
The organization estimates there are about 30,000 law enforcement K-9s in the United States. Each vest is valued at about $1,800, weighs approximately 4 to 5 pounds and carries a five-year warranty.
