Community Meeting Tonight for Washam Potts Project

By Dave Vieser — A community meeting to provide information on a proposed multifamily development on Washam Potts Road will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Cornelius Town Hall.
The site, 9910 Washam Potts Road, is currently vacant except for a single-family home built in 1924. The proposed project would consist of 16 new single-family homes, while the 1924 home would remain in its current location. The 16 homes would occupy 5.5 acres of the site’s 7 acres.
Speaking on behalf of applicant Nate Bowman, project manager Lisa Simmons said the density proposed for the project would be similar to that of the nearby Reserve neighborhood. Plans currently call for 20% open space. Buffers between existing neighborhoods and sidewalk connections also would be included.
For the project to proceed, the developer will need to obtain a zoning change from neighborhood residential to conditional zoning. The community meeting, where residents can ask questions and discuss the project with the developer, is the first step in that process.
The next step, a town board public hearing — the first of two for the project — is currently scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Town Hall.
