Acropolis, a Cornelius icon, closing April 30

April 18. By Dave Vieser. Whether you’ve enjoyed breakfast or the Greek favorites which have been served at the Acropolis Cafe and Grille on Catawba Avenue for over a decade, take note: the Cornelius mainstay is closing its doors for good on Sunday April 30. The property is being sold to make way for a 5,700 square-foot QT convenience store. Mayor Pro Tem Woody Washam announced the closing date at Town Hall Monday night.

Many residents are sad to see them go. “We will all miss the team at Acropolis,” said Cornelius resident Pat Jackson, a former Kiwanis president who held. “I have great memories of attending Kiwanis Club meetings there every Thursdaymorning for many years.” Jackson said lots of great community initiatives were hatched at Acropolis over bacon, eggs, and coffee.

Acropolis is known for a long list of specialties including everything from Greek Pork Chops and Pastistio (Greek lasagna) to Moussakka and one of the best chicken salads in the region. Get the avgolemono—lemon-chicken soup—while you still can. It’s a real treat.

“I remember welcoming them when they opened in our town,” said Mayor Pro Tem Woody Washam, who has holds community meetings at Acropolis with Commissioner Jim Duke. “The great owners, employees and food will definitely be missed,” Washam said.

The property is assessed at $1.78 million, according to Mecklenburg County tax records, with Acropolis Enterprises LLC, as the owner. Current annual property taxes on the restaurant are $19,038. The owners of the restaurant could not be reached, and it’s unclear whether they plan to reopen in another location.

“The best part about going to Acropolis was knowing that you would run into some friends and neighbors at any time of the day,” Jackson said.

If a rezoning plan for the property is approved by the Cornelius Town Board, half of the 3.16 acre site will be developed for the QT building and infrastructure while the other half of the property will remain pervious. Current plans call for 16 gas pumps, with the convenience store on a 45 degree angle toward the Catawba/Highway 21 intersection.
