Bonefish Closes in Birkdale
Bonefish Grill, a casual-dining seafood chain known for wood-grilled fish and steaks, has closed its Birkdale Village location. The restaurant had been operating in the shopping center near Dick’s Sporting Goods since 2012.
Bonefish Grill is owned by Bloomin’ Brands Inc., a Tampa-based restaurant company that also operates Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse. In 2025, the company began restructuring to reduce costs and improve performance, including eliminating about 100 corporate support jobs and pursuing restaurant closures and lease nonrenewals.
The company made no public announcement about the closure. A sign on the front of the building states it’s closed and no one answered the restaurant’s phone, but a recorded message states, “Thank you for calling Bonefish Grill. This location is permanently closed.”
In a statement, a Birkdale spokesperson said the restaurant closed “ahead of its 2027 lease expiration as part of the company’s broader portfolio strategy.”
“We’re grateful for the restaurant’s partnership over the years and are actively exploring other dining concepts for the space. We look forward to sharing more as plans develop,” said the spokespeson.
Bonefish Grill participated in Taste of Birkdale on Saturday afternoon, a food and drink festival featuring about a dozen of the shopping center’s restaurant tenants, serving its signature Bang Bang Shrimp.
This marks the third chain restaurant to close in the area in recent months following broader corporate restructurings. The closing of Foxcroft Food & Wine followed closures in Raleigh and Greenville, S.C. Hickory Tavern announced locations in Huntersville, Mooresville, Charlotte and Columbia were closing to focus on long-term growth.
