Hickory Tavern closes in Birkdale Crossing

Hickory Tavern in Birkdale Crossing has closed its doors as part of a larger contraction of the restaurant’s footprint in the Carolinas.

In announcing closures in Huntersville, Mooresville, Charlotte and Columbia, South Carolina, Florida-based Artistry Restaurants said the decision was made to focus on locations best positioned for long-term growth. Artistry purchased the portfolio of Hickory Tavern restaurants in 2025.

The landlord was notified the same day as Monday’s announcement, and by Tuesday morning, the exterior sign had been removed. A sign on the front door directed patrons to the restaurant’s “Harris Road location … only five miles away.” The location is actually more than eight miles away on Harris Corners Parkway.

“While never an easy decision, it is important that we regularly evaluate where we can operate more efficiently so our resources and future investments are directed toward the priorities that will best serve our teams and guests,” Bryan Lockwood, CEO of Artistry Restaurants, said in a statement. “These changes, along with other efficiencies, will support Hickory Tavern’s long-term plan and strength as a brand.”

Hickory Tavern opened as an anchor tenant in Birkdale Crossing in 2009, joining Office Depot. The office supply store closed and was replaced by Michaels in 2024.

The retail complex is marketed by Charlotte-based New South Properties, which said it has already fielded inquiries about the space from Charlotte-area restaurants looking to expand in north Mecklenburg.
