History Museum Open House on Sunday

The Cornelius History Museum is holding a public open house this weekend to give visitors an opportunity to learn about potential exhibits and share family stories that have shaped the history of Cornelius.
Members of the museum’s board of directors will welcome visitors on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Ag Building, the future home of the museum, located at 9623 School St. near Cornelius Elementary School.
The former school building was constructed in the 1930s and received historic designation from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission. The project stems from a History Museum Task Force established by Woody Washam during his tenure as mayor.
The nonprofit Cornelius History Museum acquired the building in 2024, rezoned the property for civic use, and received a $500,000 state grant to cover construction costs.
Museum board president David Hodson said plans will soon be announced for a capital campaign and membership drive to help support the museum, which is now expected to open in spring 2027.
