Sunset Cove Rezoning Back Before Town

By Dave Vieser — A controversial rezoning request known as Sunset Cove is back on the active review track with the Town of Cornelius, beginning with Thursday’s Architectural Review Commission meeting at Town Hall. According to Town Senior Planner Aaron Tucker, a request to resubmit the plan was received Feb. 16.
The applicant, Larry Griffin Jr., asked the town to halt the review process last summer after the initial presentation to the town board generated significant opposition from nearby residents.
“Mr. Griffin has requested to amend the zoning on approximately 8.6 acres of property at 18311 and 18323 Nantz Road,” Tucker wrote. “The proposed rezoning includes converting two existing single-family homes into event space for weddings and other special events. The proposal will also include a 6,000-square-foot outdoor event space.”
At Thursday’s meeting, the Architectural Review Commission will review the new event space elevations and determine whether they comply with the town’s architectural guidelines. The commission is not responsible for approving or denying the proposal.
The next step in the process is a review by the Town Planning Board, tentatively scheduled for March 9, Tucker said.
The ARC meeting will begin at noon Thursday in the Town Hall chamber. The meeting is open to the public, but ARC meetings generally do not offer a public comment session.
