Jan. 15 – With reported measles cases on the rise, North Carolina has released a dashboard estimating how well elementary school students across the state are protected against the disease. The dashboard uses measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination data from schools and surveys to estimate coverage at both the county and elementary school levels, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

About 91% of elementary students in Mecklenburg County are vaccinated against measles, below the 95% coverage needed to curb the spread of the disease, health officials said.

The following nearby schools are listed in the dashboard:

Barnett Elementary – 96.7%
Cannon School – 97.1%
Cornelius Elementary – 91.5%
Community School of Davidson 86.8%
Davidson Day – 97.6%
Davidson Green – 89.4%
Grace Covenant School – 79.8%
Grand Oak Elementary – 96.3%
Huntersville Elementary – 87.3%
JV Washam Elementary – 92.4%
Lake Norman Charter – 94.7%
Lake Norman Christian – 84.9%
Lakeside Charter – 92.7%
Langtree Charter – 86.4%
Lincoln Charter – 93.6%
Pine Lake Prep 92.3%
St. Mark Catholic School – 96.3%
Torrence Creek Elementary – 92.6%

Earlier this week, Mecklenburg County Public Health reported that measles had been detected in wastewater at the Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in south Charlotte. No cases have been identified in the county.

“Vaccination remains the best tool we have to prevent illness and protect our community from a large-scale outbreak,” said Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health director. “With measles detected in the county’s wastewater, now is the time to make sure children are up to date on their vaccines as cases continue to rise in the Carolinas and across the country. The measles vaccine is safe and highly effective.”

The MMR vaccine is widely available at healthcare providers and retail pharmacies, and it is offered for free or low-cost at the Mecklenburg County Public Health Immunization Clinic. The county’s mobile health unit will be providing vaccines at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools locations throughout the rest of the school year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 2,144 confirmed measles cases in the United States in 2025, the highest total since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000. As of Jan. 9, 2026, six cases had been reported in North Carolina, in Polk, Buncombe and Rutherford counties. The most recent confirmed case in Mecklenburg County was in 2024.
