Oct. 25. Hough senior tennis standout Devin Gilroy won the individual state title in girls high school tennis on Saturday in straight sets.
She handily won the match 6-3, 6-1 over Shreyal Uniyal of Green Level at the Millbrook Exchange Center in Raleigh.
Gilroy only dropped seven games and zero sets over her three match run through the state tournament, winning 6-1, 6-2 against in the quarterfinals against Caralyn Izod of Apex Friendship and 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals against Braelyn Roberson of Hoggard.
Gilroy began the postseason ranked the No. 6 singles player in the state. She returned to Hough this season after training in Spain during her junior year.
Her only loss this season came against Myers Park rival and friend Teagan Riley, a result she avenged in a straight sets just a few weeks later to wrap up the regular season. Riley and her playing partner, Lila Cheatwood, won the state 8A doubles title on Saturday.
Gilroy plans to attend Emory University next fall to continue her studies and tennis career.
