Hurricane Preparedness Week means being prepared for more than wind

Helene’s devastation in Asheville

May 1. Happy National Hurricane Preparedness Week, which runs May 4-10 in advance of hurricane season, starting June 1. Hurricanes may bring high winds and power outages, but flooding is usually Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s biggest threat. The importance of preparing for hurricane season remains a top priority after the destruction caused last year by Hurricanes Debby and Helene, and residents are encouraged to take steps to protect their homes.

Essential items include:

—First-aid kit
—Weather radio and batteries
—Prescription medicines
—Sleeping bag or blankets
—Changes of clothes
—Hygiene items such
—Cash
—Pet supplies including food, water, vaccination records
—Face masks and hand-sanitizer

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30, with systems typically peaking in September. Learn more at StormWater.CharMeck.org.
