COVID update Aug. 16: NC hospitalizations five times higher than mid-July

Aug. 16. The NC Dept. of Health and Human Services today reported 3,778 new cases of COVID-19 statewide, and 2,651 related hospitalizations. There were 54 deaths between Friday’s NCDHHS report and today’s.

On July 16, there were 536 people hospitalized due to COVID in North Carolina, up from 492 on July 15. On Aug. 2, two weeks ago, there were 1,359 hospitalized.

Testing

Positive tests are coming back at the rate of 12.8 percent statewide.

Mecklenburg

In Mecklenburg County, there were 1,589 new cases between Friday and today, as well as six new deaths. The county-wide positive test rate is 12.6 percent. Last week an average of 260 individuals with laboratory confirmed COVID-19 infections were hospitalized at acute care facilities in Mecklenburg County.

North Mecklenburg (change from Friday)

Cornelius: 47 new cases, 3,235 cumulative total, 26 deaths total.

Davidson: 10 new cases, 1,887 cumulative total, 15 deaths total.

Huntersville: 87 new cases, 6,906 cumulative total, 55 deaths total.
