2 different contractors, 2 different spills, 2 weeks apart on Paradise Cove

July 13. Two different private contractors working on Paradise Cove Court were responsible for sewage spills on June 29 and July 12, closing the same cove to swimmers.

—On July 12, a contractor for TDS hit a sewer line while directional boring.

—On June 29, a landscape contractor ran over a sewer box which caused the line to break.

No Swimming

A no swimming advisory was issued for the cove yesterday after an estimated 200 gallons of untreated sewage was discharged from a residence on Paradise Cove Court. The pipe has been repaired and the discharge discontinued.

In addition to use by nearby residents, the cove is sometimes used for anchoring and swimming.

Monitoring continues

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff will monitor water quality in the area until conditions are deemed safe for human contact.

Rusty Rozzelle, with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ Water Quality Program, said the advisories are standard procedure.

“Since this cove on Lake Norman is used for recreation, it is important to inform residents of the discharge and advise against swimming in the impacted area due to the potential risk to human health,” Rozzelle said.
