10,398 new COVID cases sets record

Jan. 7.  It’s been another record-setting day for the coronavirus in North Carolina. There have been 137 new deaths and a total 3,960 COVID-19 patients statewide, but new cases—from which hospitalizations and deaths arise—soared to 10,398, 9 percent above the record 9,527 set on New Years Day.

The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services reported a cumulative total of 7,213 deaths related to the coronavirus and a total of 3,960 people hospitalized in North Carolina.

Testing

Today’s NCDHHHS report shows a 13.5 percent positivity rate, down from 17.8 percent yesterday.

Mecklenburg County

There were 10 new deaths in Mecklenburg County due to the coronavirus. There were 962 new cases in today’s report, up from 774 yesterday. The positive test rate county wide is 13.9 percent, not much changed from 13.4 percent yesterday.

North Mecklenburg

Cornelius: 29 new cases; 1,762 cumulative; 19 deaths total.

Davidson: 10 new cases; 917 cumulative; 9 deaths total.

Huntersville: 56 new cases; 3,564 cumulative; 32 deaths total.
