Some churches canceling services, 10 degrees tonight

Jan. 7. [UPDATED 6 pm] Cornelius roads are much improved from this morning, but churches are deciding whether to have services tomorrow, or close. The weatherman says it will drop to 10 degrees overnight, so what melted in the brilliant sunshine today will freeze solid.

The 9 am service and Sunday School at Bethel Presbyterian Church have been cancelled. The 11 am service may go on. An update will go out later today. NEW: Mt. Zion United Methodist Church has cancelled all services—the parking lot is a sheet of ice.  Point of Grace cancelled Sunday School and is going ahead with the 11 am. Community in Christ Lutheran cancelled all services.

Catawba on both sides of the bridge, Main Street, Washam Potts and Hwy. 21 were cleared early today. Side streets like Ferry, Knox, Washam and Church were clear by noonish and quite passable.

Rite Aid and major drug chains are open, the Food Lion parking lot is mostly cleared. Acropolis, Alton’s and Fresh Chef are open; Port City Club is closed today and Fresh Market grocery store said it was closing at 3 pm.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service, which had been forecasting a low of 11 degrees tonight, just revised that downward to 10 degrees. The high Sunday is 28, but the National Weather Service says temps will fall to 6 degrees tomorrow night. That’s warm—compared to the record January low in Charlotte of -6 degrees back in 1985.
