Weather fans: Watch, warning and advisory explained

Dec. 7. Have you ever wondered what a Winter Storm Watch is, as opposed to a Winter Storm Warning? And what’s a Winter Weather Advisory anyway?

The calendar says winter is still two weeks away, but it’s still good to know the difference since meteorological winter is well under way.

—A Winter Storm Watch is issued when at least 3 inches of snow and/or ice accumulations of one-quarter inch or more within a 12 to 24 hour period are likely within the next 24 to 48 hours.

—A Winter Storm Warning is issued when at least 3 inches of snow and/or ice accumulations of one-quarter inch or more are likely within the next 24 hours

—A Winter Weather Advisory is issued when 1 to 3 inches of snow or ice accumulations of less than one-quarter inch are expected within the next 24 hours, causing travel difficulties.

Oh, about today’s weather: Snow is expected above 2,500 feet, and 2-5 inches could accumulate above 3,000 feet. Some of the computer models have hinted that any rain showers crossing the Piedmont today could be mixed very briefly with snow even though temps are well above freezing. There is some very cold air above.
