‘Venue’ mixed-use project proposed for downtown

June 22. By Dave Vieser. The first public presentation of the Venue, a mixed-use project which would be built in downtown Cornelius, drew a mixed reaction at the Town Board’s June 21 meeting.

MPV Properties of Charlotte seeks to rezone about two acres at 19813 South Main Street to develop up to 75 apartment units and 6,000 square feet of ground floor retail, restaurant, commercial, and office space in one five-story building.

It’s a short walk from the Cain Center for the Arts.

Speaking in favor of the project was Bill Russell, from the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce.

“This project isn’t just compatible with the Cain Center for the Arts, it sings off the same sheet of music and will be a beautiful companion piece.”

Historical perspective

Some nearby residents offered a different view. “I’m very concerned about the impact this will have on our small streets,” said Theresa Schwab who lives on Townwood Drive. “Twenty-seven years ago we were told the town should transition to high density to support the train. Well the train didn’t come then and it’s not going to get here, so I don’t know why we need high density.”

The next step in the approval process for this project will be a hearing before the town’s Planning Board, at a date to be announced. A second public hearing before the Town Board will follow.
