Tropicana owners do an about-face

Feb. 14. By Dave Vieser. Cambridge Hospitality Group, which operates Peninsula Prime, Kats Seafood and Jacks Corner Tap, is revisiting plans to close the Tropicana nightspot on West Catawba, which were announced last month.

Instead, the Tropicana will reopen in the nearby Kat’s Seafood location. Kat’s will cease operations.

On Jan. 16, Cambridge co-owner Jim Gordon said the Tropicana, which had been closed due to a fire last summer, would close. The live music nightspot was popular and lived on in weekend events at Kat’s.

Reopening in May

On Facebook, Cambridge said that Tropicana would reopen May 1 at the Kats Seafood location on West Catawba. The post said it would feature Mexican food as well as entertainment until 2 am on weekends.

Efforts to reach Cambridge officials to explain the change of heart were unsuccessful.

The Tropicana was originally located in the eastern portion of a 4,700 square foot building at 19732 West Catawba Ave. The remainder of the structure houses Jimmy John’s.
